Health insurance companies are exempt from the Sherman Antitrust Act → huffingtonpost.com

soupsoup:

jayparkinsonmd:

And the best solution Washington can come up with is mandating that we all purchase products from a private industry that is exempt from the first Federal statute to limit cartels and monopolies, and today still forms the basis for most antitrust litigation by the United States federal government.

I’m not a lawyer, but are federal health insurance mandates constitutional, especially when the private companies we’re forced to purchase from have federal protection from being a monopoly?

Here is an opinion on that question that’s worth reading. (via)

“According to Simon, Starbucks’ success demonstrates how deeply commercialism defines who we are — that is, how much energy, emotion and time we invest in what we buy as a representation of who we are.” —Notes to Self: Starbucks as a Social Stabilizer | Psych Central News

“[A] lot of authors think of “readers” the way we think of any intangible but demonstrably present phenomenon, like bacteria. We can’t see them, so we don’t think about them much. We like them in theory when they’re helping us, digesting our food et cetera — in fact, we take it for granted that they will do so – but mostly we only notice them when they’re making us sick.” —Emily Gould on the publishing industry. Her post is worth reading.

Like a big stupid dog that won’t stop eating, Stephenson Billings uses a lot of similes (!!!) in his pointless screed about Gawker for something called Christwire.org. But don’t bother condemning it — the entire site is linkbait-driven satire.
