Gingrich's private ventures are going bankrupt

The Gingrich Group bankruptcy proceedings spotlight the remarkable reversal of fortune of the half-dozen organizations associated with Gingrich. The presidential contender recently ended his campaign $4.8 million in debt. A political nonprofit he headed, American Solutions for Winning the Future, which raised $52 million between its founding in 2007 and its dissolution last July, also ended in debt.

The decline of the health policy center began earlier than previously realized. When Gingrich began considering a presidential bid in early 2010, “the membership began to drop off,” according to Nancy Desmond, who served as managing partner of Gingrich Group LLC, which did business as the Center for Health Transformation. She was one of three owners of the company, but as the managing partner she alone testified at the May 9 meeting of creditors on the third floor of the Richard B. Russell Federal Building.

Opened in 2003, the center pulled in $59 million over nine years from more than 300 companies, some of which paid as much as $200,000 in dues. Among its activities, the center and Gingrich helped push a mandate requiring everyone to carry health insurance. At the time, the position was beneficial to the center’s healthcare industry members, but Gingrich later repudiated it as a candidate.

Desmond said revenues fell from just under $7 million in 2010 to $4 million in 2011 and then to less than $300,000 in the first quarter of this year. Some $1.2 million in dues that had been expected earlier this year never materialized because those members also decided not to renew. By March the center was no longer able to pay the rent on its suite of offices in Atlanta and Washington.

And that’s when I clicked ‘Close Tab’

“Newt Gingrich warned President Obama and his campaign against further criticism of Mitt Romney’s private sector record, admitting that his own attempts at using the Bain Capital line of attack were …” —Huffington Post

“Today, I am suspending the campaign, but suspending the campaign does not mean suspending citizenship.”

— Newt Gingrich, ending his campaign.

Well, now that he mentions it, suspending Newt Gingrich’s citizenship because he has to suspend his presidential bid sound just great to me. Add that to my progressive wish list.

The Newt Gingrich campaign’s donor list is up for rent — and I’m only half joking when I say we progressives should start raising funds to use it for one big, epic practical joke. How much would you pay to create shame and indignity among all his funders?

Oh thank you sweet baby jeebus…

cognitivedissonance:

It’s over.

Summary:

  • Rick Perry had a meltdown. His train of thought derailed multiple times and he was slurring his words slightly.
  • Mitt Romney’s hair was jauntily tousled and he probably gets a boost from this.
  • Herman Cain proved he’s not a misogynist by referring to Rep. Nancy Pelosi as “Princess Nancy” and gave Jim Cramer a stroke by referencing 9-9-9 when Cramer said specifically not to at all.
  • Michele Bachmann insulted poor people by saying they could pay taxes by buying “two less Happy Meals.”
  • Ron Paul suggested students pay for college like they pay for cell phones and that getting rid of student loans will make the price go down. He alternated between Grandpa Simpson and soothsayer.
  • Rick Santorum was lost because he couldn’t talk about abortions and gay people killing America.
  • Newt Gingrich got his ass handed to him by moderators for claiming “media is not reporting accurately how the economy works.” At a CNBC debate.
  • Jon Huntsman was the grown-up in the room, reminding everyone Americans watching this debate are hurting. They’re losing their jobs, their houses, and there’s no simple solution. He had ideas versus talking points. So he’s going to sink further than 1% in the polls.

Accurate. Read that last bullet point and think about what it means for the GOP for a moment.

But … but … if the ad directly quotes speech in the very context it was originally said, how would it be a … oh screw it.

Somebody ask Mike Huckabee what he thinks of this.

A protester dumped a bunch of glitter on Newt Gingrich and his wife tonight at a book-signing in Minneapolis. The man approached the couple during the event at a downtown Minneapolis hotel and showered the rainbow-colored confetti on the pair. He then yelled, “stop the hate” and “feel the rainbow,” presumably a nod to gay rights. Liberal activist Robert Erickson appears to behind the shimmery mess.
